Step 2
Step 2 answers the following questions
How often should stimulation be provided?
How often should stimulation be reduced?

A student may exhibit mixed sensory responses and providing stimulation and reducing stimulation may need to occur simultaneously. For example, a student may require noise dampening headphones Auditory Over Responsive) while watching a spinning toy (Visual Sensory Seeking).
Over Responsive is a pronounced sensitivity to sensory stimuli.
Under Responsive is a lack of organization of sensory stimuli resulting in low arousal. Under responsive students may exhibit Sensory Seeking behaviors.
Perform a behavior observation to confirm results of the Checklist and to determine how frequently to deliver sensory assistance.
-
Using the behavior observation form, focus on occurrences of the behaviors of concern that were identified on the checklist.
-
Observe closely for behaviors relative to identified sensory areas, document time of occurrence, and how the student meets sensory needs (seeks stimulation, avoids stimulation)
-
Specifically determine with what frequency this behavior occurs by searching for patterns in the times documented.
When does our target student need stimulation added or removed? How frequently will we intervene to maintain optimal arousal?
